2 Easter Sunday

As it grew light, Lina jumped out of bed, stretched, quickly got dressed, and grabbed the grumbling Ted. Unlike Lina, Ted looked very tired. He probably hadn’t slept well. Lina thought she’d heard a strange rustling sound outside in the garden. She looked out the window; it must still be very early—the sun had just risen. Lina quickly checked the little cage where Finn, her black-and-white rabbit, was sleeping. But Finn wasn’t there. Where on earth was he? She hoped he wasn’t back in Grandma’s garden again. She quickly grabbed Ted and walked through the hallway to the front door. Berni, the big St. Bernard, lifted his head. He wondered why Lina was up, and above all, he wondered what she was up to. So early—it couldn’t mean anything good, he thought. He slowly got to his feet and shook his fur. “It’s okay, Berni,” Lina said to him. “I just want to see where Finn is.” Ted rolled his eyes—always that cheeky little rabbit, he thought. What has Finn gotten up to now?

So Lina opened the door; with Ted in her arms and Berni following behind her, they set off to look for Finn. It was still quite chilly out in the garden; the first warm rays of sunshine offered little warmth. She should have put on a sweater; she was already getting goosebumps. The cool air brushed against her skin, and the grass still had scattered dewdrops that fell onto her feet and legs, leaving little cold shivers as she walked through the grass. She had just quickly put on the dress that was on the chair in her room. Grandma had laid it there for her to wear today. For today, a particularly beautiful Sunday dress had been chosen, along with matching white shoes. Lina heard a rustling and soft voices coming from over there. She saw that the gray-and-brown-striped cat was sitting on a tree branch, watching the commotion in the grass. When a splash of paint flew toward the cat in a wide arc, it jumped down, hissing. Now Lina saw what was going on in the grass as she got closer. There was Finn, of course! He had a paintbrush in his paw and was stirring a paint bucket, then splashing the paint in a high arc onto an egg.

Finn looked happily at Lina when he heard Berni growl. Berni, the big St. Bernard, wasn’t thrilled about getting splattered with paint. Ted, Lina’s little teddy bear, ducked just in time and managed to avoid getting hit by a drop of paint.

“Look, Lina, how beautifully I’ve painted these Easter eggs. Benny the Easter Bunny will be happy when he sees them,” Finn called out to Lina. “I see, Finn. I think Benny the Easter Bunny was probably already here. I can already see a colorful egg lying in the grass over there,” Lina said to Finn. “I painted that egg, Lina,” said Finn, smiling happily at her. “I’ve scattered the eggs all over to help Benny,” Finn continued. “What do you mean by that, Finn?” Lina asked, looking at him in surprise. “Well, I’ve hidden the eggs all over here in the grass, Lina, so Benny doesn’t have to work too hard with them.”

“Oh no,” Lina exclaimed. “But Benny the Easter Bunny always puts the colorful eggs in an Easter basket, not scattered all over the grass, Finn,” Lina said to Finn.

“Oops…” Finn said, looking at Lina with wide, astonished eyes.

“Oops… is that all you have to say?” Ted asked, exasperated. “Look at the mess you’ve made. All this paint everywhere. We’re going to have to clean this whole place up,” Ted continued, angrily addressing Finn. Ted muttered something under his breath, and Lina saw tiny, bright magical sparks flying everywhere and settling down all around. The drops of paint disappeared back into the paint bucket. The little magical sparks continued to swirl over the eggs hidden in the grass. Lina ran quickly over there and picked up the individual painted eggs. She gathered them all in her dress. Grandma certainly won’t be happy to see all those paint drops on her dress. She looked at Ted, and he said to her, “Don’t worry, everything will be back to normal. As if nothing happened. This will be our secret.” Lina placed all the colored eggs she had collected in one spot under the tree. Ted made a few magic sparks around Lina, and the paint drops disappeared from her dress.

Lina grabbed the kicking Finn and ran back, with Berni, the St. Bernard, following behind her. Tiger, the gray-brown tabby cat, jumped back onto the branch and surveyed everything carefully from above. Tiger, the cat, loved her spot up here on the branch. From up here, she could watch everything clearly and, as usual, undisturbed. Only when Finn, that cheeky little rabbit, is around is there no peace. The worst are Blecky and Finn together. Blecky is Timo’s black lamb, who also likes to bolt from there every now and then and hide in Grandma Margaret’s garden with Finn. Tiger doesn’t like Finn and can’t stand Blacky either. The two of them are too cheeky for her. There had been enough excitement for today; when Timo comes over to Lina’s with his parents later, things will surely be quieter out here. Tiger closed her eyes contentedly and took a little nap in the early, warm morning hours.
